• Seminar Description:In recent years, the delicate balance between human activity and wildlife preservation has faced increasing threats. The natural habitats of many species continue to shrink due to urbanization, deforestation, and climate change, underscoring the significance of proactive conservation efforts. One such effort involves promoting ecotourism as a means of raising awareness and funding for wildlife preservation.

  The “Role and Challenges of Ecotourism in Wildlife Conservation” symposium focuses on the critical role that ecotourism plays in the global conservation landscape. Gathering experts, researchers, and practitioners from Japan and Kenya at the Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Sierra Leone, the symposium’s objective is to foster a comprehensive discussion on the multifaceted aspects of ecotourism, using chimpanzees as a central theme. This choice is influenced by the recent recognition of chimpanzees as Sierra Leone’s national animal and the desire to explore the development of ecotourism in the region, which has faced challenges such as past civil conflicts.

  When practiced responsibly, ecotourism can provide sustainable solutions to the economic and ecological challenges faced by wildlife habitats. By offering alternative livelihoods to local communities, it can alleviate the pressures of resource extraction and habitat destruction.
